From my YourCardiff column,

Liberal Democrat Mick Bates was admitted to a Cardiff hospital after falling over in the street and banging his head in the early hours of the morning following a lengthy night’s drinking.

His party has also launched an internal investigation.

Montgomeryshire AM Mr Bates, who had already announced he was stepping down at next year’s election, said last night: “I give an unreserved apology if I abused anybody.”

It is believed he has no recollection of the night’s events.

How old is he? 62, that’s how old! I’m shocked that someone of that age would get so drunk that they’d fall over.

  1. Insider

I heared he was out drinking with a Tory press officer – can’t imagin how it’s ended up in the press three weeks late, but in time for the Lib Dem’s Welsh conference.

Can your friends confirm or deny this? Would be a scoop for you CB.

  2. When the story broke over the weekend we decided at Welsh Icons not to run it as it was such an obvious conference spoiler piece. We are politically-agnostic but we try and be fair with our coverage

This is a disgraceful act and he should not be allowed to serve our nation and the people of Montgomryshire!

Insider – I heard he’d been ‘relaxing’ with Tory AMs as well as others.

As Dom says this is obvious conference spoiler – a shame for Mick because he is a decent bloke even if he is in the wrong party. Whether the paramedic prosecutes will tell us all we need.
