Plaid Councillor makes a tit out of himself

March 4, 2010 | Filed Under General, UK Politics, Welsh Politics | 2 Comments

From YourCardiff:

Fairwater councillor, Neil McEvoy, the deputy leader of Cardiff Council, tried to get a resident to bet £100 that the Council was cleaning up the area.

The exchange between Mr Morgan, a Fairwater resident, and Coun. McEvoy came after the resident complained that rubbish was not being collected properly.

Coun McEvoy said: “Want to have a bet? I know the area is being cleaned up and I’m happy to bet £100 with you that I can prove it has been. I will give £100 to charity and I want you, Mr Morgan, to take up that bet.”

Mr Morgan declined to take up the offer.

What an overreacting idiot. Fair enough, the resident may have felt that in their area there wasn’t enough being done to collect rubbish but there’s no need to try and fleece the resident out of £100. This guy is not fit for office.

Map of where it is held

Another ego-driven blog for me, one that may attract nutters, but who cared! I don’t normally come to political meetings – no conferences, tweet-ups, drinks etc but I thought I’d break with tradition and go to a special Cardiff bloggers meet-up next month.

When? Thursday 11th March
Where? Pica Pica, Cardiff
Time? 7pm
Cost? FREE
What? A short presentation on blogging and a chance to meet other bloggers in the area.  If you pre-register at the site using the link below, you get a free drink! There will be free wi-fi and Tweet using the hashtag #cdfblogs.

The event is hosted by YourCardiff, the Cardiff site I write a weekly blog for. I’ll be there just after work as I don’t finish until 8pm so I hope to see some of my readers and other bloggers!

Click here to read more information on the event and let me know in the comments on this post if you’re planning on going.

Welsh Assembly Member assaults hospital staff

February 8, 2010 | Filed Under General, Me, Media, UK Politics, Welsh Politics | 4 Comments

From my YourCardiff column,

Liberal Democrat Mick Bates was admitted to a Cardiff hospital after falling over in the street and banging his head in the early hours of the morning following a lengthy night’s drinking.

His party has also launched an internal investigation.

Montgomeryshire AM Mr Bates, who had already announced he was stepping down at next year’s election, said last night: “I give an unreserved apology if I abused anybody.”

It is believed he has no recollection of the night’s events.

How old is he? 62, that’s how old! I’m shocked that someone of that age would get so drunk that they’d fall over.

My first article for YourCardiff has been published: Free breakfasts in Wales

February 3, 2010 | Filed Under General, Media, UK Politics, Welsh Politics | Leave a Comment

As posted on a previous blogpost, I blog a couple of times a week for YourCardiff, part of WalesOnline. The first blog has bene published, here’s an excerpt:

In First Minister’s Questions today, FM Carwyn Jones was boasting about Baden Powell’s Primary School in Cardiff being the 1,000th school in Wales to sign up to the ‘free breakfasts in schools’ initiative. However, you have to question the amount of money being pumped into it – £8.3m last year!

Exciting news!

February 2, 2010 | Filed Under General, Me, Media, UK Politics, Welsh Politics | 5 Comments

Yesterday, Ed Walker, the Online Communities Editor of Media Wales launched YourCardiff, a site under WalesOnline exclusively about all aspects of Cardiff life – Events, Food & Drink, Crime, Housing, Music, Photography, Theatre, Tech and Politics. I’ve been chosen as the Politics blogger for the site and you can read my blogs by clicking here.

I’m looking forward to blogging for a site exclusively about Cardiff and part of Media Wales Ltd, it’s a big step closer to my dream of being a political journalist and I can’t wait for the coverage prior to the election. It’s going to be full of interviews, insight and a few surprises along the way, so feel free to bookmark the site – I’ll be blogging a couple of times every week.

Don’t worry, this site will not be neglected in any way. It will carry on as normal and I’ll post a link and an excerpt here of each blog I do on the YourCardiff site.

Can Cardiff Sports Village be finished now we’re out of the recession?

January 27, 2010 | Filed Under Business, General, Me, UK Politics, Welsh Politics | 2 Comments

Cardiff Sports Village was put on hold in early 2009 due to the economic downturn and partial progress has been made since. This is despite work going full-steam ahead on completing the St David’s 2 and John Lewis department store. It seems that when big businesses are losing out on customers, the economic downturn doesn’t matter. Now we are officially out of recession, will the Olympic Sports Village be completed? It was expected that many of the athletes hoping to compete in the 2012 Olympics and 2014 Winter Olympics would train at the swimming pool and snow/ice centre but the credit crunch has hit hard and building work was slowed, mostly to a standstill.

If anyone has any news, please let me know. I’m a keen snowboarder and can’t wait to try skiing and ice skating in a brand new centre on my doorstep – the current ‘rink-in-a-tent’ doesn’t really attract me’. The White Water Rafting Centre opens in April 2010 and is part of the Sports Village, so maybe the rest will open then or just after? I do hope so.

Peter Hain claims Labour is ‘radical’.

January 1, 2010 | Filed Under General, UK Politics, Welsh Politics | 1 Comment

From WalesOnline:

THE Labour Party has rediscovered its “radical” side and is galvanised for next year’s general election, Welsh Secretary Peter Hain said yesterday.

He said: “I’m very confident we can put together a radical manifesto. I think Labour has rediscovered its radical roots.

It’ll take something radical to win the election! I think Labour should lie low, accept defeat and then come out with radical policies that spring imagination into the nation. That’s the only way they won’t be in the political wilderness for the next decade. There are so many options and so many things the Labour Party may do, the next 12 months are going to be very interesting indeed. I bet in 12 months from now we look back and say “If you’d tell me we’d be in this political situation a year ago, I wouldn’t have believed you”. But what, I have no idea. Brown doesn’t even have an obvious successor. That’s if he will need one.

Told off by Facebook for being a fan of Tactical Voting

Pfft! I don’t really have any idea who Alun ‘Turncoat’ Davies is. If this group had people on there who were being abusive or threatening then they should be banned, not those wanting to work out how to defeat him. I joined this group as it was recommended by a political friend and must admit to never having looked at it but I’ve seen a lot more offensive groups. I wonder if Alun ‘Turncoat’ Davies made a complaint? Hmm.

That notice will be on my Facebook for quite a while.

Why I left the Conservative Party

Wherenext

This is in relation to my previous blog.

I’ve been reluctant to write this blog as I felt it might undermine a party that I would still vote for and have friends within, but the more I think about it, the more I’m sure that this case is not unique and is rife across the entire political spectrum, regardless of whichever party and needs exposing.

A week last Sunday on Twitter I was watching The X Factor Results show on Sunday and tweeting along with the show, ranting my opinions on each contestant like most young people too poor to go out drinking. In the heat of the moment I referred to one contestant as looking like a ‘pikey’. Unbeknownst to me, this is an apparent racist term, something which I wasn’t aware of and used it to describe someone who was rather scruffy. Anyway, a couple of tweeters including @snorestore and @ChrispLOL were adamant that I was a racist and as I was Conservative Future Chairman for UWIC at the time they said they were complaining to David Cameron.

In the heat of the moment I regrettably referred to them both as ‘cunts’, which I must say released a lot of anger and tension, I fully recommend it, as does Malcolm Tucker.

Anyway, the following Tuesday I had a call from a person rather high up in the Conservative Party (who shall remain nameless) saying that there had been a complaint addressed to David Cameron that he needed sorting out. He advised me that I should “write a grovelling apology on Twitter” and he would put the mistake down to “inexperience”. Also, after I apologised he said “maybe you will think again before pressing ’send’”.

Looking back on it, I’m furious with myself for apologising and rolling over when he insisted. I’m done with party politics. I may still be a Conservative voter and the people I’ve met in the party have all been fantastic, but the truth is that I can’t be doing with being told what to say, think, write etc. It’s not me.

UPDATE:

I’m rather surprised and heartened at the amount of positive responses I’ve received. A few people have blogged their opinions on it and I think it’s only polite to list them here. Thanks;
