Listening to 5 Live, a lot of people feel Nick Griffin was bullied. I don’t think he was but the entire show was based on his views. Have we ever had a Question Time that is entirely dedicated to one member of the panel? In the middle of a national postal strike and an ever-increasingly controversial war in Afghanistan, did we need to spend 55 minutes on Nick Griffin’s racist views and the other 10 on Jan Moir? Hmm. Anyway, my review of the panelists:
Chris Huhne – (7) - He did well, challenged Nick Griffin as did everyone else, very harsh but attempted to needlessly mention Enoch Powell when the question could have been answered without. Enoch Powell was used by him and Straw to attack the Tories – certainly out of the blue and irrelevant in Straw’s case, we’re talking about current views, not those in the 1960’s that are now educated out of the Tory party.
Baroness Warsi – (8) - She did very well, said everything that any sane person would agree with and slammed Nick Griffin who squirmed more than he did with any other panel member. She also faced Nick Griffin when addressing him which is something that other panelists, mainly Greer did not.
Jack Straw – (8) - One of my favourite Labour Party members did his party proud. He proved that his view on the BNP appearing on Question Time was the right one. He successfully slammed and ridiculed Griffin with great effect.
Nick Griffin – (3) - There was the chance he could have been victimised, played as a bullied man with intellectual disabilities and gained public sympathy. Luckily this didn’t happen as he stumbled around, making statements totally out of the blue – no idea what he was going on about when mentioning Jack Straw’s father, quite a degrading low-blow and one that failed to gain any support with. Loved his quote when he said that two men kissing in public “makes [him] feel a bit weird”. The sight of Griffin in public makes me feel a bit weird. In fact, the sight of any BNP member, anywhere makes me feel very weird.
Bonnie Greer – (6) - She was great when she got going but she showed Nick Griffin no respect (most would argue rightly so), however just being rude to someone, turning your back on them and speaking over can cause people to feel sorry for Griffin being bullied. However, that was very minor, she was poor in the first twenty minutes as everyone wondered why she was there but after she got her teeth into the debate and put her own non-political stance on Griffin’s policies she was a breath of fresh air.
David Dimbleby – (6) - Did well, very, very harsh on Griffin but managed to control the debate.
What do you think? Was Griffin bullied too much? Should he have been shown more respect, or do his views prove he should have no respect? Was it right to put him on Question Time? I certainly think so, however, should it have been a ‘Nick Griffin Special’, rather than the weekly one which didn’t include any current affairs or is immigration a topic that’s very important to people?
