Disney to buy Marvel for $4bn!

August 31, 2009 | Filed Under Business, General | 1 Comment

marvel

Not very political I know, but this has to be one of the biggest buys of recent years! I’m a big fan of the Kingdom Hearts franchise which sees SquareEnix and Disney appear in the same videogames – I wonder if Marvel characters will be joining them too.

$4bn is an enormous amount of money, Disney must have a lot of plans to get their money’s worth. I suppose we’ll learn about them as soon as the purchase fully goes through.

Plaid claim UKIP are an ‘extreme party’

THE mainstream political parties need desperately to reconnect with voters or extreme alternatives like Ukip and the BNP will increasingly fill the vacuum, a former Plaid Cymru Minister [Rhodri Glyn Thomas] has warned.

What? Since when were UKIP extreme? Plaid are calling for Wales to become independent whereas UKIP want UK independence from Europe.  I know which one is more radical and extreme! Far-left socialists or right-wing Conservatives? Oh, sorry I forgot the Golden Rule. You can be as left-wing as you want without being called ‘extreme’ but anyone on the right is extreme. Typical lefties.

Teenager involved in Marc Scaife fracas speaks!

LibyaTravelVisa

A commenter on the WalesOnline article regarding the abusive phone call left by Marc Scaife has identified themselves as the teenager on the receiving end of the tirade. Here’s what he has to say:

As the teenager in question, I just wish to make a few things clear. I have not approached or made comments to the media, and secondly this is not the fault of the Burry Port Town Band, merely an individual and his handling of a situation.

I noticed Welshdude [on the comments] mentions that the other side of the story is not known, but all that I stated is fact and the truthful events to people.

These are as follows:-

- I had to withdraw from the trip to Libya due to working commitments.

- I warned Marc Scaife this might be the case over a week ago and confirmed this on Friday. I have acknowledged the inconvenience this could cause and have been most apologetic.

- I then received an invoice of inflated cancellation charges from Mr Scaife. I merely replied this invoice was a little confusing as the invite letter stated people were not required to contribute in anyway and have been led to believe this was not financed by the band, but by the Libyan government

- Finally I can confirm I made my own arrangements to have my passport returned from London.

I’ve tried to resolve the situation in a civil, polite and apologetic manner. In light of this I feel that such an abusive and degrading answer phone message to be upsetting and unfair

I’d quite like to hear Marc Scaife’s side to the story, maybe he can contact me when he’s back from Libya.

Spotify application given ‘green light’ by Apple!

Wow, I didn’t expect this to happen but it is being reported that Apple have given the green light to the Spotify application for the iPod/iPhone. I’m shocked as it is certainly risky whether it will affect iTunes, Apple’s music store. For further details on Spotify, check out my blog I wrote when they had submitted the app.

Welsh Labour Councillor Marc Scaife bullies 19 year old

New Labour, Old Tricks

New Labour, Old Tricks

From WalesOnline: WELSH Labour confirmed last night it was investigating a councillor and brass band chairman in connection with a “foul and abusive” phone message that has been posted on YouTube.

Carmarthen Labour councillor Marc Scaife, who has put his name forward for selection as the party’s parliamentary candidate in Carmarthen East & Dinefwr, left on Wednesday for a controversial tour of Libya with Burry Port Town Band.

The band have been criticised for continuing with the tour – part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi coming to power – after the release last week of the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing.

In the phone message, a man who identifies himself as Marc Scaife, uses highly offensive language to berate a 19-year-old member of the band who pulled out of the Libyan tour at a late stage, creating a perceived security problem.

The caller is heard saying: “Listen very f****** carefully. You are a f****** idiot…There’s a massive security risk because of you. Do you realise what’s actually going on? Is anything going on in your tiny little mind?

“We are supposed to be playing in front of some of the biggest world leaders out there. Security is 100% tight and it includes the British Royal Family.

“I expect you to sort this f****** thing out. You go up there, you sort it out or expect a call from MI5. All right?

“I’ve had some serious explaining to do because of your irresponsible actions. Call me back as soon as you get this f****** message or I’ll be driving over to your parents’ house tonight to speak to them.

“Wise up, s***head.”

What an awful human being! If I was in a brass band due to do a tour of Libya, I’d pull out. This bullying by the Labour Councillor Marc Scaife is disgusting and he should resign his seat immediately. Bullies like this are not welcome in politics today and I hope every person in his ward hears about this.

Listen to the voicemail message here.

UPDATE: A few blogs are referring to this as an exclusive for myself - It was actually WalesOnline that I mentioned in the first paragraph. Apologies if anyone was misled.

Keith Vaz will be fuming!

An uncovered government error has revealed that current legislation to stop the sale of adult videos and video games to under-18s is actually unenforceable.

According to The Times, the component of the 1984 Video Recordings Act pertaining to the classification and sale of videos, video games and DVDs was never brought into force.

Therefore, under the current situation anyone can sell violent videos and video games to under-18s without fear of prosecution. In turn, Police and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs have been advised to put any prosecutions on hold until emergency legislation can be introduced.

Oops! Haha Keith Vaz, the loon who thinks violent videogames should be banned and all games should be educational will be livid after finding this. His war on videogames is like nobody else’s I’ve seen and I wonder how long it takes him to break his silence.

Cameron made me cry

Ivan & David Cameron

Ivan & David Cameron

Paul Waugh has a very interesting article on David Cameron’s interview with Grazia magazine. I actually want to buy it, it seems very interesting.

Here is what Paul said:

Most of today’s papers carry extracts from David Cameron’s interview with Jane Moore for Grazia magazine.

But the magazine is now out and the full version* reveals just how painful the Tory leader finds the loss of his son Ivan. It’s impossible not to be moved by his words.

“Losing a child is the most painful thing in the world. People tell you that it will get better, but it doesn’t really,” he says.

He underlines how difficult his recent holiday in Brittany was without his six-year-old “beautiful boy”.

“The holiday was particularly geared up for Ivan. We got the ferry so we didn’t have to fly and worry about the wheelchair, and those wonderful Brittany beaches have ramps down to the sand…so, yes, it was hard. You know, we’d expected to go on holiday all together..,” he says.

Jane Moore reveals how she had seen the Camerons two Christmases ago at the London stage version of The Snowman. While Sam looked after the younger two children, David cradled Ivan in his arms for the entire performance, whispering reassuringly to him throughout. Proof that the family always included him in their plans.

“It was a very special communication we had with him. He would hear our voices and his eyes would dart across the room. There were times when he seemed quite wel, but there were times when the suffering…

“I try to remember that suffering, actually, because it somehow makes it a bit better…to know he’s not suffering any more. When I look back on his short life, there was an awful lot of severe epilepsy and pain.”

I’m told that the interview was not meant to focus on Ivan – and it does follow him to Cameron Direct events and features many other issues – but the Tory leader unexpectedly opened up when Jane Moore put the questions to him.

I don’t like making a habit of copying entire blogposts but this, especially The Snowman bit made me get quite emotional. A father any children would be lucky to have.

Compare the meerkat? That’s racist according to The Guardian

August 25, 2009 | Filed Under General, Media, UK Politics | 12 Comments

24060

@ByrneTofferings has tweeted to a link in The Guardian by Peter Jones which has really riled me. I’ll paste the entire article as it’s pretty short but will put in bold the hilariously pathetic parts:

A few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I were watching TV at home when the advert for comparethemarket.com appeared on our screen. I had seen the ad before and not thought anything of it. However on this occasion, my girlfriend, who is Ukrainian, turned to me and said: “I don’t like this advert, it is very offensive to me.” I mentioned it to a friend who said his Latvian lodger also found it offensive.

The advertisement centres on the word “market” – a word that eastern Europeans/Russians pronounce “meerkat” – using talking CGI-animated meerkats. The sole point of this African animal’s appearance is, it seems, to highlight the idea that east Europeans cannot pronounce the word market properly when they speak English. It struck me how racist it was to parody what is now a significant part of the British population in this way. It also occurred to me that were the ad to use stereotypical Indian or Caribbean accents in the same way it would never be allowed on TV (I think you’ll find there are a lot, none that spring to mind though).

Over the following week the ad seemed to be perpetually in our faces, the meerkat characters shouting “meerkats”, “meerkats” in their stereotypical tones into our living room. I decided to complain first to ITV. When I looked on the ITV website, to my shock, I found that their business development manager Richard Chilvers was boasting that this was his favourite ad and that it helped to bring his “passion alive”. I emailed my complaint. ITV responded that “the subject matter, content and treatment of all commercials are always given serious consideration to determine their suitability for transmission”. They also stated that “particular care is needed to ensure that advertisements are not misleading or offensive”. They then stated that I should contact the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) which I duly did.

The ASA informed me that it did not assess advertisements before they went out but responded to complaints. The initial assessment and clearing was done by a company called Clearcast which, I was told, conveniently did not deal with the public. I then emailed my complaint to the ASA, whose response stated: “Whatever impact the mild stereotyping of the eastern European accent has is undercut by the fact that it is a cartoon rather than a live actor. As such we do not feel that the content of the commercial is likely to provoke widespread offence.” It said it had not had any other complaints.

I asked my girlfriend why that might be. She told me that people from eastern Europe were brought up in a society where it was not normal to complain, especially to such sectors as the government and the media. She told me that they would not expect to be able to do anything about it, they would not know of the existence of the ASA and the power to demand that an advert was taken off television. It is also the case that as so many people from eastern Europe were so new to the country that they would not want to be seen to be causing trouble. It then dawned on me that this ad was targeting a sector of the population who would be unlikely to fight back.

The irony of the situation is that those in charge at the ASA and ITV probably consider themselves the most politically correct in society. However, the evidence shows that they have only learned who not to offend, not how not to offend. It looks as though those from eastern Europe are going to have the same fight on their hands as people from India and the Caribbean did all those years ago.

Oh grow a fucking pair, you sad, pathetic little man. This has really riled me and it astounds me that people still buy The Guardian! What a load of nonsense. I’m sure Harriet Harman would be proud – trying to find offence in everything that’s a joke. I bet he wouldn’t have any complaints if the advert wasn’t so widespread and on loads.

It’s not targeting a group that won’t fight back, it’s not being derogatory at all. They wanted to play on the market/meerkat soundalike and decided that the Eastern European accent was the closest to fit this. Stop being such a moron that gets an orgasm every time they find something they can claim to be offended at.

It’s people like this that make me want to move to a country that doesn’t care as much. Thank God Labour will be gone at the next election, I can’t be doing with any more of the PC, left wingery!

Should we support Nick Griffin or Harriet Harman?

The UK’s equalities watchdog has begun legal action against the British National Party over concerns about ethnic restrictions on its membership.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission said limiting membership to those of an “ethnic origin” described as “indigenous Caucasian” was illegal.

It has issued proceedings against BNP leader Nick Griffin and two officials.

The party called this a “pathetic attempt” by the commission to divert attention from its own problems.

But equality minister Harriet Harman said: “No party should be allowed to have an apartheid constitution in 21st Century Britain. I welcome the action.”

I do agree with Harriet here – no party should have an apartheid constitution in 21st Century Britain, all that I have a slight quarm about is when she says ‘allows’. Should a group with an exclusive membership be told what rules they must follow? Surely showing to the public how awfully racist they are is bad enough – why force them through the courts to stop race discrimination?

No political party should have a rule that discriminates on age, sex, race, orientation but should we force this with law?
